Wildflowers in Brittany

See many wildflowers in Brittany by walking along one of the woodland paths, meandering through the meadow, or taking a relaxing stroll around the lawns’ verges

In spring and summer their vivid colours and sweet scents elicit many ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’. Wildflowers are more than just beautiful, they also provide critical habitat for pollinators, other insects and wildlife.

Our aim is to increase the number and diversity of wildflowers in Brittany to support pollinators, such as bees and butterflies – 35% of the world’s food crops depend on pollinators to reproduce.

Wildflower management

Our flowering spring meadow is moderately fertile and seasonally waterlogged adjacent to the stream. Faster growing species like bracken, bramble and willow are kept in check to prevent wildflowers being over-topped. 50% of the meadow is mown annually, the remaining half biennially. Mowing is carried out when the flowers have set and shed seed. In the woodland, transient and new ‘permanent’ colonies of wildflowers occur after woodland management operations disturb the ground and allow more sunlight to reach the woodland floor; exemplified by the appearance of Foxgloves and the ever growing army of Bluebells colonising recently coppiced stands of hazel and sweet chestnut.

Wildflowers not only provide natural beauty to our landscape, they benefit the environment, wildlife and us.

  • Spent a wonderful month in Hazel Cottage. Couetilliec, is a very special tranquil place, situated in beautiful Breton Countryside. The property was well equipped and very comfortable, with a wooden deck which overlooked the lawn and the forest beyond.

  • There are many beautiful places to explore within an hour's drive in all directions, though Couetilliec is so comfortable you might not want to leave!
